The Family Game by Catherine Steadman
Description
Harriet has never met her fiance Edward’s family, but she knows who they are. Almost everyone does. The powerful Holbeck family is one of the wealthiest in the country, and one of the most secretive. But Harry and Edward have just gotten engaged, and they can only avoid his family for so long. When they’re invited to Thanksgiving dinner at the Holbecks’ New York City mansion, they go, and nothing is ever the same again. Because the Holbecks have a deadly secret, and they’ll do anything to keep it quiet.

Sensible/relatable main character: I don’t know about you, but I get annoyed with main characters who don’t seem to think outside the box. They take things at face value and never question anyone’s motives or the possibility that someone isn’t who they say they are. Harry is not that character, and I loved it. She had active, evolving thoughts, questions, suspicions, and just plain common sense. It was honestly refreshing that her character’s train of thought matched mine as I read it; it made her relatable in a way that some main characters are not. I really appreciated how her character developed throughout the book.
Atmospheric: I loved the descriptions in this book; they painted vivid pictures in my mind and, honestly, I wanted to visit the places described. This takes place during the Thanksgiving to Christmas period and I felt like there was some of that seasonal feel to the story–including some of the anxiety and uncertainty that can come with the lead-ups to spending holidays with family–but with a twist (think an annual Krampusnacht party, with an actual Krampus). I genuinely enjoy atmospheric reads and I wasn’t expecting this book to be one, so it was a pleasant surprise!
Eh
Development of secondary characters: I felt that there could’ve been a bit more development with the members of the Holbeck family. Some of them just faded in and out as they were needed (Oliver and Stuart, for instance) with not a lot of substance, and there were times where I thought, “Wait, who is this one again?” But honestly, this is a nit-picky criticism, and not one that grated on me while I was reading the book.
