Fun Halloween Books Your Toddler Will Love
When I was a child, I got so excited when it was time to decorate for Christmas (always beginning on the day after Thanksgiving while I was growing up). One of my favorite things was when my mom and dad would bring down all of the old Christmas books and place them in this sweet, wooden Rudolph book holder. There was something about having these Christmas books that just made the season feel like it’d truly begun, and made it even cozier. I’d look forward to revisiting those books every year, another year older, wiser, and looking for some of that Christmas magic every child seems to have. I always told myself I’d have those special Christmas books for my children in the future, just to make everything just a little more cozy and magical.
And now I do. Only instead of just Christmas, my son has books for almost every holiday (mostly from his grandparents, but ones my husband and I have picked out as well). They come out at the beginning of each season and then go away when that season is done. And I get just as excited to bring them out as I did when I was little.
Halloween certainly has some really cute books that my son has simply adored. He loves books in general, but give him ones with pumpkins and “boos” (ghosts) in them, and he’s thrilled. I had no idea how many were out there before I had him, but there are so many and I have to restrain myself from buying or borrowing them all. He gets so excited to read them, and we love reading them to him as well.
If you’re looking for some last-minute Halloween children’s books that have at least one toddler’s stamp of approval, look no further! Here are some of our favorites.

Spooky Pookie by Sandra Boynton
We love Sandra Boynton, and my son especially loves her Pookie books. So when I saw that there was a Pookie Halloween book, I had to get it. And it’s just as adorable as Boynton’s other Pookie books! Definitely check it out if you and your little are fans of Boynton’s books (she has Eek! Halloween and Boo! Baa, La La La as well!).
Little Blue Truck’s Halloween by Alice Schertle
The Little Blue Truck books are all adorable and my son loves them. But there’s something special about this lift-the-flap book. The illustrations, done by Jill McElmurry, are honestly beautiful and fitting for the theme, and my son loves to tell me which animal is dressed up in each costume. It’s definitely a fun book for both of us to read, and I find myself a little sad every time I have to put it away for the season!
5 More Sleeps ’til Halloween by Jimmy Fallon
We adored Fallon’s 5 More Sleeps ’til Christmas so this was an auto-buy for us when we saw it published. And it’s a fun and beautiful read! The illustrator, Rich Deas, does an amazing job–I love his style so much. And while this book is not as great as Fallon’s Christmas book, it is still worth reading, and we do. A lot.
Don’t Push the Button! A Halloween Treat by Bill Cotter
I was not familiar with the Don’t Push the Button! books until relatively recently, but we now have the original, Halloween, and Easter versions so we’re definitely catching up. This is a fun, interactive book that my son just loves. There aren’t any bells and whistles–it’s pretend play at its best–but it’s definitely a favorite. As you read it, play it up and you’ll get to see your little’s sweet smile as the anticipation for each button push builds!
Llama Llama Trick or Treat by Anna Dewdney
The Llama Llama books are simply adorable, and there are a lot of them! We have one for almost every season, but Llama Llama Trick or Treat is one of the sweetest ones. It’s simple rhyming, and very short, but the story is sweet and the illustrations are adorable, in true Anna Dewdney style.
Halloween is Coming! by Cal Everett and Lenny Wen
Okay, I think this is one of my favorite books to read to my son during the Halloween season. I’m obsessed with Lenny Wen’s illustrations (can you tell how much I value illustrations yet?) and the story is just lyrical and fun. It brings the magic of the season to the forefront. Also, make sure to try and spot the little monsters that appear on each page!
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey’s Halloween
My boy loves his Mickey and friends so adding this book to his little library was a no-brainer. There are more than 40 flaps to look under (which toddlers just love to do!) and the book is pretty sturdy as well. Definitely check it out if your little loves Mickey Mouse!
Mouse’s First Halloween by Lauren Thompson
This one might be my son’s favorite Halloween book ever. We’ve read it So. Many. Times. I don’t know what it is about this one (maybe the “squeak” we make for Mouse?), but he simply adores it. I don’t mind, though. It’s a cute book, and Buket Erdogan’s illustrations are a perfect fit for the story!
You’re My Little Baby Boo by Nicola Edwards
If you’re looking for a sweet book to read to your littlest ones, this is definitely one you should check out. This book is adorable and we read it a lot, especially last year when my son was younger. Natalie Marshall’s illustrations are bright and so, so cute, and I think most parents will appreciate the story itself.
You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie by Nicola Edwards
Another book in the same series, You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie has more general fall elements, but it also has a page or two of Halloween in there. It’s just as sweet as Baby Boo and we tend to read both regularly!
