Character development: I love a book where the author does such a thorough job of creating the characters that you feel like you know them. They all have flaws and redeeming qualities, secrets and fears. They’re just realistic personalities. That’s how I felt about the characters in this book, especially June. The relationships were nuanced, the heroine was flawed, and the romance was realistic and not sappy. Definitely an A+ for character development!

Atmospheric: This is a given in any Adrienne Young book, as far as I’m concerned. All of her books have a cozy, mysterious vibe to them, no matter the plot. She has a way with words where she can describe a scene and make you feel like you’re there, or feel like you’ve been there. It’s almost a familiar feeling, something homey. I don’t know how she does it, but every single one of her books so far have been atmospheric in the best way.

Plot: This is a more unique plot, and that’s something else I’ll praise Adrienne Young for. You can read an author’s backlist and, if you read too many in a row, it can feel like you’re basically reading the same book over and over again. But I can honestly say that no two Adrienne Young books are the same. Spells for Forgetting and The Unmaking of June Farrow are inherently different adventures, locations, characters, vibes, etc. The same can be said for her YA books. And I love it, because I never know what to expect from her books, which means they’re unpredictable in the best way.

Eh

Nothing. I know this seems like a cop-out, but to me, this book didn’t have a moment of “eh” for me. I was excited when I sat down to read it and thought about it when I wasn’t. It’s simply a fantastic read, and I will definitely be rereading it in the future.

Recommendation & Rating

Do I recommend this book? If you like books with time travel, fantasy and magical realism elements, as well as a bit of romance, then Y.E.S. This book gave me a book hangover, and I’m so glad I added it to my fall TBR. It’s one that stayed with me for days.
